Longueville Hall, located in Newton Longville, has a fascinating history that intertwines with the surrounding landscape. Let’s delve into its past:
The present parish of Orton Longueville encompasses over 2,409 acres and includes Botolphbridge, which was originally a separate parish. These two rectories were united in 1702. The parish lies near the borders of Northamptonshire, separated from it by the River Nene. The subsoil consists mainly of Oxford Clay, with Cornbrash near the river. The land undulates, ranging from 22 ft. to 65 ft. above Ordnance datum. The village itself, situated about 54 ft. above Ordnance datum, lies just off the main road connecting Peterborough and Oundle. Notably, the church and village are located just outside the extensive park surrounding Orton Longueville Hall.
Intriguingly, archaeological discoveries have been made within the park. Gravel pits revealed the remains of a Romano-British hut village, providing glimpses into ancient life. The early history of the formation of the two parishes—Orton Longueville and Orton Waterville—remains somewhat obscure. In Domesday Book, no distinction of name is made, and the different holdings are all referred to as Overton.
Originally, it appears to have been king’s land, part of the Abbey of Peterborough’s soke. However, portions were alienated, including a grant to the Bishopric of Lincoln. By 1086, the abbey had expanded its holdings, and the parish of Orton Waterville also contained the fee of the Bishop of Lincoln. The separation of the two parishes likely occurred before 1185. The 12th-century church in Orton Waterville, parts of which still exist, stands as a testament to this historical division.
